Small Worlds - AI LitRPG Story Sandbox

Small Worlds is a little world full of people who believe they're real.

Each character is played by its own AI. None of them knows it's an AI: they have names, pasts, worries and opinions, and they remember what happened yesterday. One more AI plays the World itself. It sets the scene, describes what happens and quietly decides who acts next.

Sit back and watch the story unfold, or step in:

• Join the story as your own character, or speak as anyone in the cast
• "Make something happen": a storm, a stranger at the door, a dragon on the road
• Write a line again if you don't like it, or remove it
• Leave fields empty and "Fill the blanks" invents the rest
• New characters wander in when the story needs them

LitRPG worlds

Turn on levels, classes and skills and a System starts handing out titles, skills and level-ups as the characters earn them, with status screens when someone says "Status!". It's built on a big library of races, classes and skills.

Runs on your own PC

• No account and no subscription. After a one-time download it works with no internet.
• The first time you start it, Small Worlds sets up its own AI. It picks the best one for your graphics card, so there's nothing to install yourself.
• Your stories stay on your computer.
• Prefer online AIs? Paste in a key from Google Gemini, Groq, OpenRouter or about 20 others (several have free tiers).

Free on Android

The Android app is free: grab "Android app (free)" below. It's the full app, not a cut-down demo, and it works completely on its own, running its own AI on your phone. If you also have the PC version, on the same Wi-Fi your stories are shared both ways, so you can start a story on your PC and carry on in bed.

Free software

Small Worlds is open source (GNU GPL v3), and its worlds and characters are CC BY-SA. The source code for both is included. Buying the PC version supports development.

What you need

PC:

• Windows 10 or 11 (64-bit)
• Recommended: an NVIDIA graphics card with 6 GB or more of video memory. Slower PCs still work with a smaller AI or an online one.
• 5 to 10 GB free space for the AI (downloaded the first time it runs)

Phone:

• Android, 64-bit (most phones from the last 5+ years); 8 GB of RAM or more works best
• 1 to 3 GB free space for its AI (downloaded the first time, Wi-Fi recommended)
